Western Juniper is common in the high altitudes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California and the high deserts of Central Oregon. This species may develop thick, long roots that entwine rock outcrops which are mimicked in the shape of the twisted branches. Finding a dying twisted Juniper is itself a difficult task because they are often located on high rock outcroppings far off the beaten path.
